Termez is located in southern Uzbekistan on the border with Afghanistan, along the Amu Darya River. Most notably, Termez has several early Buddhist monasteries and Alexander the Great's city Alexandria on the Oxus. In Soviet times, the city had a military base during Soviet military operations in Afghanistan. I visited Termez in March 2024, taking the overnight train from Gulistan for 13 hours.
